Guwahati, May 1: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sharply responded to Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi, stating that he does not need lessons on democracy, public discourse, or decorum from anyone. In a strong statement on the social media platform X, Sarma wrote, “I do not need to learn about democracy, public discourse, or decorum from anyone, especially A.M. Singhvi. Decorum and Singhvi cannot coexist in the same room.”
Sarma emphasized that the real issue is not political debate but the targeting of an individual. He accused Singhvi of attempting to malign the character of a woman with no political connections, using fake documents from other countries on national television.
The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the courts will take cognizance of the matter and punish those responsible. He stated, “I believe that the courts will eventually pay attention to this case and penalize those who tarnish a woman’s image using false documents to influence electoral outcomes.”
Sarma also accused Singhvi of avoiding direct debate, saying, “It is easy to speak where I am not present. This is not called a debate; it is called avoiding fair dialogue.” He concluded his statement with, “This is just the beginning, not the end. Satyamev Jayate.”
This statement came after Singhvi criticized Sarma’s role in the Pawan Khera case, referencing recent comments from the Supreme Court. Singhvi had pointed out that some public statements related to the controversy were inappropriate and weakened democratic norms, emphasizing the need to protect dissent and freedom of expression in democracy.
Recently, the Supreme Court granted anticipatory bail to Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera in connection with alleged comments related to Sarma’s wife, Rinki Bhuiyan Sarma. Justices J.K. Maheshwari and A.S. Chandurkar provided relief with conditions.
Following this recent exchange, political tensions between the BJP and Congress have escalated in Assam, with both parties continuously accusing each other over this sensitive issue.
