New Delhi, May 4 (Udaipur Kiran): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is emerging as the largest party in West Bengal, signalling a major political shift and strengthening the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) footprint across the country. With this development, the number of states governed by the NDA is set to rise to 21.

Despite a possible setback in Tamil Nadu, the opposition INDIA bloc has managed to retain leadership in six states across the country, although with limited gains in seats. In Kerala, election outcomes have raised uncertainty over the future prospects of the Congress-led alliance.
Following the anticipated victory in West Bengal, BJP is expected to independently govern 15 states. Additionally, the NDA’s tally reaches 21 states with alliance governments in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Nagaland, and Meghalaya.
In Tamil Nadu, the DMK-Congress alliance appears to have been unseated, with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay poised to take charge as the new leader. Meanwhile, in Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is set to form the government.
According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Congress currently holds a majority in only three states—Karnataka, Telangana, and Himachal Pradesh. In Jharkhand, it remains in alliance with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM). In Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Bhagwant Mann, is not part of the INDIA bloc but continues to oppose the BJP at the Centre.
With a majority mark of 14.5 out of 29 states, BJP has strengthened its hold by reaching 15 states after its performance in West Bengal. Party leaders and workers celebrated the victory, with senior leaders joining in the celebrations.
In Tamil Nadu, celebrations were reported at Vijay’s residence as early estimates showed TVK leading in 110 out of 234 seats.
In Assam, Congress candidate Gaurav Gogoi lost the Jorhat Assembly seat to BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami, who secured 69,439 votes and won by a margin of 23,182 votes.
As per ECI trends, BJP is leading in 79 seats in Assam, followed by Congress with 23 seats. The Bodoland People’s Front is ahead in 10 seats, and the Asom Gana Parishad in 9 seats. Other parties, including AIUDF, Raijor Dal, and UPPL, are leading in a smaller number of seats.
Amid strong early trends favouring BJP in West Bengal and Assam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the party headquarters in New Delhi later in the day.
