New Delhi, September 11 (Udaipur Kiran) : The ongoing BRICS summit in New Delhi has taken on increased importance in light of escalating global conflicts, including the prolonged Russia-Ukraine war and tensions in the Middle East. Retired Commodore Ranjit Rai emphasized the significance of this summit, noting that it comes at a time when the Russia-Ukraine conflict has entered its fourth year and the situation between Iran and Israel is intensifying.
Rai highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership at the summit is particularly vital. Modi, known for his strong relationships with global leaders, has invited Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is set to arrive soon, while Russian President Vladimir Putin has already attended and engaged in bilateral talks.
In addition to the main summit, a trade conference associated with BRICS is also underway, underscoring the economic focus of the group, which now represents nearly half of the world’s population and a significant portion of the global economy. The BRICS nations are increasingly demanding a larger role and representation within institutions like the United Nations and the International Monetary Fund.
As the Global South gathers at the summit, the attention of the West and Europe is also drawn to the proceedings. Experts express hope that this summit will conclude with a solid and constructive joint statement, unlike the previous meeting where consensus was elusive.
Rai also addressed the implications of Modi’s meeting with Putin, suggesting that it sends a clear message to the world that India is not anti-Western, but rather advocates for global cooperation, aligning with the philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” or the world as one family. He noted that Modi’s discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian likely covered critical issues, particularly in the context of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and Lebanon.
The retired commodore concluded by asserting that Modi is well aware of India’s potential contributions to addressing these global crises.
