Bhopal, May 5, 2025 — A sharp change in weather conditions has gripped Madhya Pradesh, with widespread thunderstorms, rainfall, and hailstorms reported across multiple districts. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the active weather system is likely to persist until May 8, impacting both western and eastern regions of the state.

Thunderstorms and Hail Batter Key Cities
On Sunday, Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Khandwa, and Dewas witnessed intense rainfall coupled with hail and strong winds. Indore received 70 mm of rain (almost 3 inches) between 5 PM and midnight, while Ujjain recorded nearly half an inch of precipitation.
The sudden downpour caused temperatures to dip significantly. For instance:
-
Bhopal: 37°C
-
Indore: 36.2°C
-
Gwalior: 38.5°C
-
Ujjain: 41°C
-
Jabalpur: 37.5°C
In several places, the temperature dropped by 3–4°C within a day, bringing temporary relief from the heat.
Alert for More Rain and Hail Across MP
The IMD has attributed the current spell of unstable weather to Western Disturbance, cyclonic circulation, and a trough system. These factors are combining to generate widespread thunderstorm activity across the state.
Districts likely to be impacted today include:
-
Eastern MP: Maihar, Umaria, Shahdol, Anuppur, Dindori, Mandla, Balaghat, Seoni, Chhindwara, Pandhurna — with forecasts of rain and hailstorms.
-
Northern MP: Gwalior, Morena, Bhind, Datia, Sheopur, Shivpuri — expected to experience winds exceeding 60 km/h.
-
Central and Western MP: Indore, Bhopal, Ujjain, Neemuch, Mandsaur, Ratlam, Jhabua, Burhanpur, Khargone, Khandwa, Dewas, and others — with continued thunderstorms and rain.
The IMD has issued alerts in several of these regions for potential hailstorms and strong wind gusts over the next few days.
Outlook: Active Weather Pattern Until May 8
The stormy weather is forecast to continue through May 8, with chances of light to heavy rainfall, hail, and high-velocity winds on a near-daily basis in different zones of the state. Authorities are on high alert and residents are advised to:
-
Stay indoors during storm activity
-
Avoid travel in areas under red/yellow weather alerts
-
Protect livestock and vehicles from hail
