New Delhi, September 10 (Udaipur Kiran) : Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has successfully concluded his three-day visit to Sri Lanka, describing it as a fruitful and beneficial trip that has revitalized the multifaceted relationship between India and Sri Lanka.
During his visit, Singh highlighted the exchange of several significant agreements and cooperation documents, including a crucial pact concerning the upgrade of Sri Lankan Air Force’s L-70 artillery. Additionally, agreements were made regarding academic collaboration between the national defence colleges and the National Cadet Corps of both countries.
Singh engaged in extensive discussions with Sri Lanka’s top leadership, reviewing various aspects of the bilateral partnership. Notably, he virtually inaugurated three Bailey bridges constructed by Indian Army engineers in the Sri Lankan districts of Kurunegala and Batticaloa. These bridges were built as part of India’s $450 million aid for rehabilitation following the devastating Cyclone Dithav.
The Defence Minister also noted the supply of essential components to the Sri Lankan Air Force and Navy, emphasizing that these efforts are strengthening defence cooperation between the two nations. He expressed optimism that his visit has further accelerated India-Sri Lanka relations, which continue to progress across nearly all areas of bilateral cooperation, including defence and security.
Singh met with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya during his trip. In Colombo, he also interacted with renowned former Sri Lankan cricketers Aravinda de Silva, Sanath Jayasuriya, and Chaminda Vaas, acknowledging the admiration for their exceptional performances in India.
Moreover, the Indian-made multi-role stealth frigate INS Udaygiri arrived in Colombo during Singh’s visit, underscoring the importance of maritime security and cooperation in the Indian Ocean region. Singh participated in a deck reception aboard INS Udaygiri, further highlighting the significance of India-Sri Lanka maritime collaboration.
In addition, Singh visited the Sita Amman Temple in Nuwara Eliya district, where he offered prayers and sought blessings. He expressed gratitude to the people of Sri Lanka, President Dissanayake, Prime Minister Amarasuriya, and the Sri Lankan government for their warm hospitality.
He concluded with a hopeful message that the friendship between India and Sri Lanka will reach new heights, as both countries continue to work together for peace, security, and prosperity in the Indian Ocean region.
