Womens Safety Under Yogi Government: A Ground-Level Transformation

Lucknow, May 1: Women’s safety has been a significant issue in Uttar Pradesh prior to 2017. The state was often in the news for crimes against women, both nationally and internationally. However, in the past nine years, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken substantial steps to enhance women’s safety, dignity, and self-reliance, resulting in a noticeable sense of security among the women of the state.

Under Yogi Adityanath’s administration, there has been a decline in crimes against women, instilling fear among criminals. The government has expedited the hearing of cases related to crimes against women to ensure that no offender escapes justice. Women’s safety is not just a claim but a visible change at the ground level, exemplified by initiatives such as beat policing, Mission Shakti, pink booths, anti-Romeo squads, and fast-track courts.

During the five years of the previous Samajwadi Party government, not a single fast-track POCSO court was established, despite the POCSO Act being enacted in 2012. In contrast, the Yogi government has set up 218 fast-track special courts (FTSC) over the past nine years, facilitating swift justice in cases of rape and POCSO offenses.

Additionally, special POCSO courts have been established in 75 districts, aiming for decisions within six months. Since 2017, Operation Shakti has been a dedicated police campaign to prevent harassment, while Mission Shakti, launched in 2020, focuses on a comprehensive approach to women’s safety, dignity, and self-reliance, training 40,000 police personnel to combat crime.

The women’s helpline 1090 has resolved complaints from over 5 million women, providing an avenue for filing FIRs. For the first time, women police stations have been established, with at least one operational in every district.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath formed the anti-Romeo squad upon taking office in 2017 to curb harassment. As of February 2026, these teams have conducted checks on millions and registered cases against thousands of offenders.

The government has also initiated pink booths and outposts for women’s safety, establishing over 2,500 pink booths and launching pink patrolling with two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles. Furthermore, the Safe City Project connects several districts, including Lucknow, with thousands of CCTV cameras for online monitoring to enhance women’s safety.

The Yogi government’s aim is not just to report crimes against women but to ensure action and punishment. The charge sheet rate improved from 58.3% in 2012 to 76.2% in 2022, with ongoing enhancements. The conviction rate has also risen from 17.2% to 27.8%.

Under the previous Samajwadi Party regime, an average of 78% of cases related to crimes against women remained pending in courts. The Yogi government has reduced this to 65% through fast-track and POCSO courts.

Significant measures have been taken for women’s welfare under the Yogi administration, empowering victims to speak out against crimes without feeling guilty, backed by the support and trust of the state government.
