TMC Councillor Bhishmadev Karmakar Arrested for Disrupting Election Campaign

Kolkata, May 10: Bhishmadev Karmakar, a councillor from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has been arrested by police in Baharampur, Murshidabad district of West Bengal. He is accused of disrupting the election campaign of Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.

A senior officer from the Murshidabad police stated that the arrest was made based on a complaint filed during the election campaign. Karmakar, who represents Ward No. 19 of the Baharampur municipality, was apprehended on Saturday night. He also serves as the president of the youth wing of TMC in the Murshidabad organizational district.

On April 4, during the peak of the state assembly elections, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury campaigned in the Baharampur assembly constituency as the Congress candidate. Karmakar is alleged to have obstructed Chowdhury’s rally, during which slogans against the Congress leader were reportedly raised.

The situation escalated, prompting police intervention to prevent further disturbances. During the campaign, Chowdhury accused TMC of deliberately trying to disrupt their election activities. Following the incident, a written complaint was lodged at the Baharampur police station.

However, Karmakar denied the allegations, claiming that Chowdhury was attempting to incite unrest by bringing outsiders into the area. He asserted that local residents protested against the Congress leader voluntarily.

Following Karmakar’s arrest, some factions within TMC alleged that the action was politically motivated. Party supporters and local leaders claimed that TMC workers and leaders were being targeted for political reasons across the state.

They also alleged that the arrest occurred after the BJP government came to power in the state. However, police dismissed these claims, stating that the action was based on specific complaints related to the April 4 incident.

Police sources indicated that legal proceedings were initiated in accordance with established protocols.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a five-time MP from Baharampur, lost to TMC’s candidate and former cricketer Yusuf Pathan in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Subsequently, Congress fielded him again in the 2026 assembly elections from the same constituency, where he faced defeat once more.
