Dubai, September 13 (Udaipur Kiran) : The Indian women’s cricket team triumphed in the Women’s Asia Cup 2026, securing their eighth title after defeating the reigning champions, Sri Lanka, by 72 runs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on September 14.
Despite their victory, the Indian team did not accept the trophy from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Nakvi during the award ceremony. Following the presentations to match officials and Sri Lankan players, the event concluded without the Indian team participating. This refusal echoes a similar incident in 2025 when the men’s team also declined to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Nakvi.
Under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, India set a target of 184 runs, and the Sri Lankan team was bowled out for just 111 runs. The Indian players showcased an exceptional performance, with Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma contributing significantly through a record opening partnership of 129 runs. Indian bowlers also excelled, with Shafali taking four wickets and Deepti Sharma claiming three.
Both India and Sri Lanka entered the final unbeaten, with India having recorded a historic win over arch-rivals Pakistan during the tournament. Sri Lanka, captained by Chamari Athapaththu, secured their place in the final after a tough semi-final victory against Pakistan.
With this win, India has further solidified its dominance over Sri Lanka in T20 matches, having won 26 out of 32 encounters. The Indian women’s team, with eight titles from ten finals, stands as the most successful team in the history of the Women’s Asia Cup.
