New Delhi, September 13 (Udaipur Kiran) : During the recent BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India made significant strides in addressing global security concerns, particularly with a united statement condemning the recent Pahalgam attack. Retired Major General and defense expert P.K. Sehgal highlighted the importance of this achievement, noting that it sends a powerful message to the world, especially the West.
Sehgal discussed the implications of India’s presence alongside Russia and China within the BRICS framework, emphasizing the need for strategic balance amid growing defense ties with Russia and ongoing tensions with China. He remarked, “What India has achieved is unparalleled; it serves as a precedent. India has demonstrated to the world that it can engage with the U.S., Russia, China, and Iran without compromising its interests.”
He further elaborated on the positive outlook for India’s defense sector, mentioning the recent meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, where the importance of maintaining peace and stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) was stressed. Additionally, discussions with Russia focused on redefining the buyer-seller relationship, with India pushing for ‘Make in India’ initiatives and joint production efforts.
Sehgal outlined India’s expectations from Russia, which include upgrades to the Sukhoi-30 fighter jets, the acquisition of the Sukhoi-57, and long-range missiles capable of traveling 350 kilometers. He expressed concerns over the extent of technology transfer that Russia is willing to offer, as India aims to handle repairs and maintenance domestically.
Moreover, he noted the significance of the clear stance against terrorism articulated in the joint declaration. Despite China’s presence in BRICS, the condemnation of the Pahalgam violence, without naming any specific country, was a notable achievement. “It was clear whom the statement was directed at,” he said, emphasizing that all forms of terrorism should be criticized, irrespective of their sources or underlying causes, with calls for action against terrorists.
