Mumbai, September 13 (Udaipur Kiran) : Union Home Minister Amit Shah attended the inauguration of the Ganesh Gyanarthi Exhibition at the Asiatic Society in Mumbai on September 13. Speaking to the audience, he expressed pride in being the first Home Minister to visit the venue, emphasizing that his presence was not merely as a government official but as a proponent of India’s rich knowledge tradition.
Shah remarked that a nation unable to protect its language, culture, history, and traditions is at risk of fading away, regardless of its power. He cited India as an example of resilience, stating that even after years of subjugation, the essence of its culture and knowledge remains intact. He noted that while physical symbols of knowledge, like the Nalanda library, might be destroyed, the wisdom ingrained in the people’s consciousness endures.
Highlighting the ethos of Indian culture, Shah stated that the nation moves forward with patience in times of defeat and seeks to integrate the memories of those it overcomes into its traditions when victorious. He called for a transformation at the Asiatic Society, advocating that true knowledge should never be confined to any ideology. Instead, it should be liberated and utilized for the greater good of the world.
Shah also underscored the importance of understanding the term “Indology” in the context of the Asiatic Society, which encompasses various disciplines such as numismatics, epigraphy, anthropology, and philosophy. He clarified that the original intent of Indology was not to promote global welfare but to understand local systems for prolonged governance.
He urged the Asiatic Society to play a pivotal role in India’s development by expanding its knowledge base through three key perspectives: attracting scholars to disseminate knowledge, connecting libraries across the country through electronic means, and preserving manuscripts in Maharashtra’s villages to enrich the nation’s literary heritage.
