Bengaluru, September 13 (Udaipur Kiran) : The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has raised strong objections to the proposed screening of a documentary about Umar Khalid at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru. National General Secretary Veerendra Singh Solanki emphasized that such screenings should be halted, especially while Khalid’s case is still pending in court.
Solanki questioned the appropriateness of showcasing a documentary about Khalid, who is alleged to have incited anti-national slogans at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He expressed concerns that the Karnataka government might be attempting to promote a narrative that could influence students’ perceptions.
The ABVP has formally requested the district administration and relevant authorities in Bengaluru to prevent the screening. Solanki stated that presenting Khalid’s story in a favorable light is unacceptable, given that he is currently imprisoned on charges related to anti-national activities. He asserted that the student community would not accept such portrayals and that the ABVP would vehemently oppose it.
In response to questions about Khalid’s status as an accused, Solanki noted that it is the court’s responsibility to determine guilt. However, he argued that influencing public opinion through a documentary during an ongoing trial is inappropriate. He insisted that no screenings should take place until the legal proceedings are resolved.
Solanki suggested that if Khalid were to be acquitted in the future, then a documentary could be considered. Conversely, if he is found guilty of the charges, there should be strict actions taken against him and those involved in producing the documentary.
