New Delhi, September 13 (Udaipur Kiran) : The United Nations has recognized the increasing global relevance of the BRICS group, underscoring its role in amplifying the voices of developing countries amid a shifting world order. In a statement, UN Secretary-General António Guterres’s spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, highlighted the necessity of multilateral cooperation to tackle financial and trade inequalities, as well as shared challenges like terrorism.
Dujarric emphasized the need for comprehensive reforms in international financial institutions to protect the interests of the Global South, advocating for a more equitable global trading system that does not favor specific groups of countries.
He noted that the BRICS group represents a significant portion of the global population and GDP, making its influence vital. Under India’s leadership, the group has made strides in fostering connections and reforming international institutions.
Terrorism, described as a global threat, requires collective action from all nations, Dujarric stated, mentioning that the UN has various agencies and programs to assist member states in this fight. He stressed the importance of a consistent approach against terrorism, as its impact is felt worldwide.
Meanwhile, Meng Xianglin, editor of the International News Department at People’s Daily, remarked on BRICS as a large family of 11 plus 10 members, with China set to take over the presidency next. He shared fond memories of the recent summit in New Delhi.
Looking ahead to the upcoming BRICS summit under China’s presidency, Meng noted the dynamic and challenging times ahead. He acknowledged Prime Minister Modi’s significant responsibilities during the summit and pointed out the difference between declarations and actual decision-making and implementation, suggesting that long-term planning will be crucial.
Retired Wing Commander Prabhul Bakshi also commented on Modi’s call for inclusive representation in the UN, emphasizing that programs should reach even the smallest nations. He acknowledged the complexity of reshaping the UN but expressed optimism for progress in discussions initiated by the Prime Minister.
On Modi’s appeal to secure maritime routes and maintain open supply chains, Bakshi highlighted the importance of the Strait of Hormuz and Bab-el-Mandeb, through which a substantial portion of the world’s oil and trade passes. He asserted that the economies of Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region depend on connectivity with Western nations for trade to thrive.
