Shimla, May 27: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Himachal Pradesh, forecasting rain, thunderstorms, and hailstorm activity in various parts of the state until June 2. The shift in weather patterns comes after a dry spell, with cloud cover returning to many regions including Shimla on Tuesday.

Thunderstorms and Hail Expected on May 27-28
According to the latest forecast from the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh is likely to experience scattered rainfall and storm activity on May 27 and 28. Thunderstorms, lightning, and winds blowing at 40–50 km/h are expected during this period. There is also a possibility of hailstorms in isolated regions, prompting the IMD to issue an orange alert for the state.
Widespread Rain Predicted from May 29 to June 2
The weather is expected to become more active from May 29 onwards, with widespread rainfall likely to persist until June 2. During this time, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and stronger winds reaching speeds of 50–60 km/h are anticipated. However, the possibility of hailstorms has been ruled out for this phase.
Advisory for Farmers and Tourists
Given the evolving weather conditions, farmers have been advised to postpone harvesting and other agricultural operations until the weather clears. The IMD has urged farmers to avoid the use of electrical equipment in fields and to ensure that harvested crops are kept in safe, covered storage.
Tourists planning to visit the hills have also been cautioned to check local forecasts before travel and to take extra care in high-altitude areas where storm conditions could lead to disruptions or accidents.
Public Safety Measures Urged
The IMD has warned residents against venturing into open areas during lightning and storm activity. The strong winds expected over the next few days could cause trees to fall and damage weak structures, increasing the risk to life and property.
Although there was no rain or snowfall recorded in the past 24 hours, heavy cloud cover has been reported in many parts of the state including Shimla, signaling an imminent change in weather patterns.
As the hill state prepares for an extended spell of unstable weather, authorities and citizens alike are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
