Jamnagar, August 22: A 53-year-old elephant named Joymoti, who was seriously injured after being swept away in the severe floods in July, has been airlifted to Vantara in Jamnagar for special treatment.

Joymoti was rescued with the help of local people and government agencies after she was swept away by strong floodwaters in Nagaland. She has several serious wounds on her body. Her right eye is badly damaged and she also has difficulty walking because of an old injury to her hind leg.
Special Treatment at Vantara
Despite receiving initial treatment locally, Joymoti needed treatment at a special hospital because of her age, serious injuries and difficulty in walking.
At Vantara, she is undergoing a detailed medical examination. Special treatment is being given for her eye injury and other wounds. She will also receive proper nutrition and other necessary care.
First Such Airlift in India
Airlifting a seriously injured elephant to a hospital for treatment has been described as the first effort of its kind in India.
Joymoti was airlifted to avoid the long and tiring road journey. Special care was taken during the journey for her health, comfort and safety.
Not a Permanent Transfer
Vantara has clarified that Joymoti has been brought to Jamnagar only for special and necessary treatment. This is not a permanent transfer.
Vantara has also proposed setting up three wildlife veterinary centres, including a dedicated centre for elephants in Assam. The aim is to provide better treatment to injured wildlife closer to their natural areas in the future.
