Police Toughness Necessary Against Mafia: Dilip Ghosh

Kolkata, August 23: West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh stated on Sunday that sometimes police strictness is essential to control mafia and anti-social elements in society. Speaking to the media during the inauguration of a BJP party office in the Kharagpur (Sadar) assembly constituency of West Midnapore district, Ghosh addressed concerns that police are being overly strict. He emphasized that allowing police to act firmly is far better than letting mafia and anti-social elements operate freely. “If the police show strictness, peace will prevail in society. Sometimes, police toughness is necessary to keep mafia and anti-social elements in check,” he said.

Ghosh also launched a sharp attack on the previous Trinamool Congress government led by Mamata Banerjee, accusing it of promoting mafia and anti-social elements by keeping the police force inactive. He remarked that previously, police collaborated with gangsters and mafia leaders, but that will no longer be tolerated. He warned that encounters would occur when necessary, and the new state government will not allow police personnel to become party cadres.

He referenced the encounter of Prabhas Mandal, accused of the rape and murder of a minor girl in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas, as an example of the government’s stance. Ghosh asserted that no mafia or goon would be allowed to operate freely. “If they engage in anti-social activities, they will be shot at, not fed rice and lentils. We will do whatever is necessary to keep them in check. Encounters will happen when required, as seen in the Baruipur case. If needed, the police will pull the trigger. Harassment of common people will not be tolerated at any cost.”
