Chandigarh, August 23: Prem Garg, the chairman of the core committee of the Aam Aadmi Party, has raised alarms regarding the Dada Majra dumping ground, stating it has become a significant threat to local residents.
In a press conference held on Saturday, Garg emphasized the urgent need for public awareness about the hazardous conditions near the site, describing it as a “toxic mountain.” He noted that the air quality has deteriorated, and waste has not been cleared, despite ongoing court proceedings. Garg criticized the authorities for allegedly misleading the court by claiming that waste removal had been completed, when in fact, it remains untouched. He warned that if immediate action is not taken to rectify the situation, it could lead to severe challenges in the future.
Garg mentioned that a proposal was made to create a Detailed Project Report (DPR) at a cost of ₹70-75 lakh, but lamented that this initiative has since been abandoned, wasting the invested funds. He called for transparency regarding the Bharatiya Janata Party’s plans to address the issue, as the current lack of action complicates future processes.
He explained that the waste at Dada Majra has accumulated and compacted over time, a situation referred to as “legacy waste.” A contract worth ₹70 crore was awarded to two companies to extract this buried waste for repurposing, but Garg criticized the corporation for not appointing any supervisors to oversee the operation, which could further complicate the process.
Garg highlighted findings from an IOC survey indicating that waste remains buried up to 10 to 12 meters deep. He warned that if this waste is not extracted, it could produce methane gas, leading to chemical reactions harmful to the environment and public health.
The AAP leader questioned who is responsible for the current state of the dumping ground, criticizing the authorities for neglecting the issue. He stated that no construction activities can take place on the contaminated land, which has been repeatedly promised for development projects like cricket grounds, yet no such initiatives have materialized.
