Kiev, August 23: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that following a phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron, France has agreed to expedite the process of sending equipment and missiles to Ukraine, as well as to license the production of related missiles.
In a social media post on Saturday, Zelensky informed Macron about recent attacks on Ukrainian territory and emphasized that air defense systems are Ukraine’s most urgent need.
According to reports from Xinhua News Agency, he mentioned that Macron expressed his willingness to facilitate discussions between Ukraine and allied countries that possess the necessary missiles for the Patriot air defense system.
On the social media platform X, Zelensky wrote, “I had a very good conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron. Today, we discussed all key issues for nearly two hours. The most critical point was the need for air defense. We greatly appreciate that the French President is ready to help talk to our other allies who have Patriot missiles. We also discussed France’s air defense capabilities. I informed Emmanuel about the situation regarding the attacks, and I am grateful for his condolences for the casualties.”
He further stated, “We discussed the status of diplomatic efforts with our allies and conversations with the team of the U.S. President. We agreed on steps that could open up further diplomatic opportunities. We also talked about the funding needed for our defense arrangements this year and next year. We identified defense agreements that need to be advanced quickly in our bilateral relations.”
Macron also expressed his deep shock over the loss of many civilians in an attack on a shopping center in Ukraine. He assured Zelensky that France will increase its support for Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, particularly by providing interceptor missiles.
According to Ukraine’s national news agency, Ukrinform, Russian drone attacks targeted a shopping center and other locations in the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih on Friday, resulting in at least 16 deaths and 130 injuries.
