New Delhi/Bhopal/Lucknow, May 27 – Monsoon-related devastation has begun across several Indian states with Kerala and Maharashtra bearing the initial brunt. As per official reports, four people lost their lives in Kerala due to heavy rains and landslides, while a lightning strike killed a woman in Thane, Maharashtra.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red alerts for both Mumbai and Thane, warning of extremely heavy rainfall today.
Kerala: Landslides and Widespread Damage
Torrential downpours and landslides in Kerala on Monday led to the collapse of 29 houses and damage to 868 others. The affected districts have set up relief camps to accommodate displaced families.
The IMD has issued red alerts in 11 districts including Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall and potential flooding.
Maharashtra: Mumbai’s Early Monsoon Arrival Wreaks Havoc
Mumbai received the monsoon 16 days earlier than usual, and Monday saw nonstop heavy rainfall across the city. Waterlogging was reported in major areas like Andheri, Bhandup, and Powai, leading to severe traffic jams and disruption of local train services and flight operations.
In Thane, a woman died after being struck by lightning, underscoring the severity of the ongoing weather conditions. Authorities have urged citizens in both Mumbai and Thane to avoid unnecessary travel and remain indoors.
Himachal Pradesh: Orange Alert for Storm Activity
The IMD has issued orange alerts for Shimla, Kullu, and Mandi districts in Himachal Pradesh for May 27 and 28. Thunderstorms, heavy rains, lightning, and possible hail are expected in the region, prompting residents and tourists to stay alert.
Madhya Pradesh: Heatwave and Sudden Rains
In Madhya Pradesh, Monday brought an unusual mix of intense heat and isolated rainfall. While four districts recorded daytime temperatures above 40°C, six others experienced brief spells of heavy showers, suggesting the state’s transition into the monsoon season.
Monsoon Advances Across 14 States
According to the IMD, monsoon has now reached 14 Indian states, aided by three active cyclonic circulations. Over the next four days, thunderstorms, lightning, and rain are expected in multiple regions. The monsoon is advancing faster than usual, bringing both relief from the heat and the threat of severe weather events.
Authorities across affected states are on high alert, with disaster response teams deployed and public advisories issued to minimize casualties and damage.
