New Delhi, August 22: Pushpa Prasad, a teacher from Kuchaykot in Gopalganj, Bihar, has been selected for the National Teacher Award. She will be honored by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, on September 5, Teacher’s Day. Shailendra Pratap Singh from Sidhi, Madhya Pradesh, has also been chosen for this prestigious recognition.
Valmiki Prasad, the principal of Government Girls Middle School Kuchaykot, expressed pride in Pushpa’s achievements, stating, “She has contributed not just as a teacher but as a guardian and mother to the children, fully engaging in their education, attire, and activities. All teachers and the school community feel immensely proud, especially since the students come from very underprivileged backgrounds, and their parents are also very happy. In homes where education had never been a priority, she has worked to ignite the flame of learning.”
He highlighted Pushpa’s relentless efforts, mentioning that she built blackboards in underprivileged areas where children could not afford notebooks and pencils. Instead, these children spent their time studying on the blackboards, with full support from their mothers and guardians.
Pushpa Prasad herself shared her disbelief upon receiving the news, saying, “Honestly, I couldn’t believe it. When the congratulations started pouring in, I realized this honor was indeed for me. Thank you to everyone. Dreams have come true; this is a golden moment. I had always dreamed of meeting the President, whom I only saw in pictures.”
She acknowledged the challenges of teaching in rural areas but emphasized that success makes one forget the difficulties. “I have paved my path to success while carrying my failures with me. In rural settings, there is often a lack of education, so I spoke to the parents before the children, convincing and educating them to send their kids to school. Their cooperation has been invaluable.”
On the other hand, Shailendra Pratap Singh remarked, “This is not just my honor but a recognition for all teachers in Sidhi district, as well as for the children and parents here. I joined this school on August 13 when there were only 69 students. After speaking with parents during the flag hoisting on August 15, we raised nearly 5 lakh rupees through community support to renovate the school building. Currently, we have 202 students enrolled, with a significant number of girls. Students from my school have also been selected for military schools and Navodaya Vidyalayas.”
