Kolkata, October 29 (Udaipur Kiran): Cyclone ‘Mantha’ weakened into a deep depression early Wednesday, but its impact continues to be felt across parts of West Bengal, bringing steady rain and gusty winds to several southern districts.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone made landfall late Tuesday night along the northwestern coast of Andhra Pradesh, leading to one rain-related fatality in the state. Despite losing intensity, Mantha has triggered widespread rainfall in Kolkata, South 24 Parganas, East and West Midnapore, and Jhargram since Wednesday morning.
The IMD said the system is expected to weaken further into a low-pressure area within the next six hours, but warned that thunderstorms with lightning and strong winds are likely to continue across southern Bengal.
A yellow alert has been issued for the region. Some areas could experience heavy rainfall between 7 and 11 cm, while North Bengal districts including Jalpaiguri, Uttar and Dakshin Dinajpur, and Malda may also see heavy to very heavy rain during the day.
Although Bengal escaped the cyclone’s direct hit, its indirect impact has significantly altered the state’s weather. In Kolkata, skies remained overcast since morning with continuous light to moderate rain.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors during lightning activity. The state administration has also increased vigilance in coastal and low-lying areas, keeping disaster management teams on standby to ensure quick relief and rescue operations if required.
