Mumbai, July 17: Congress leader Hussain Dalwai has called on actor Aamir Khan to support Sonam Wangchuk in his hunger strike. In an interview with a news agency on Friday, Dalwai expressed disappointment that Khan has not yet shown his support for Wangchuk, questioning why the actor remains silent on the matter.
Dalwai also mentioned actor Naseeruddin Shah, noting that Shah supports the government but is not afraid to criticize it when necessary. He urged Khan to take a cue from Shah and demonstrate similar courage, emphasizing that artists should not be afraid to voice their opinions.
Responding to Khan’s previous statement regarding Wangchuk’s hunger strike, where Khan suggested that Wangchuk’s current approach may not be appropriate, Dalwai stated that while Khan respects Wangchuk, mere respect is insufficient. He urged Khan to actively support Wangchuk, who is fasting to demand reforms in the country’s system. Dalwai highlighted that many have resorted to hunger strikes in India to advocate for change, referencing Mahatma Gandhi’s historical hunger strikes for independence.
Dalwai also commented on the Vande Mataram bill, stating that while no one objects to the song, there are concerns about its compulsory singing in RSS branches. He argued that the invocation of deities in the song should not be imposed on non-Hindus, as it contradicts the spirit of inclusivity.
Additionally, Dalwai dismissed claims that implementing a “One Nation, One Election” policy would boost the country’s GDP, asserting that such statements are misleading. He criticized the focus on GDP growth while neglecting pressing issues like poverty, education, and healthcare.
On the recent meeting between NCP leaders and Eknath Shinde, Dalwai remarked that these leaders cannot function without power and are likely seeking the finance ministry, although he doubts Shinde will relinquish it. He also commented on the delimitation bill, expressing skepticism about its benefits and the influence of opposition parties.
