Mumbai, September 4: A major incident was averted in Maharashtra’s capital, Mumbai, on Thursday evening when a ferry carrying 38 people malfunctioned in the Arabian Sea near the Gateway of India. The vessel, named Anwari, had 34 passengers and 4 crew members on board. Fortunately, a rescue boat arrived in time, bringing everyone safely back to the Gateway of India jetty.
According to reports, the Anwari ferry offers a half-hour sea ride from the Gateway of India. Around 8:30 PM on Thursday, while returning from the excursion, the ferry experienced a technical failure approximately 1.5 nautical miles from the Gateway of India and suddenly stopped functioning.
The sudden halt of the ferry in the sea caused panic among the passengers. The crew members promptly informed the control room about the situation. Upon receiving the alert, the Mumbai police acted swiftly to assess the situation and alerted nearby ferry operators.
Within minutes, a second rescue ferry arrived at the scene. It secured the malfunctioning Anwari ferry with a rope and began towing it back to the Gateway of India jetty. The coordinated efforts of the police, ferry operators, and crew members ensured a swift rescue operation.
All 34 passengers and 4 crew members were safely brought to shore without any injuries reported. The passengers are said to be completely safe.
The Mumbai police stated that initial investigations revealed a technical fault in the ferry, specifically an issue with the engine. A detailed inquiry is underway, and the ferry’s fitness and safety standards will also be examined.
