Mumbai, March 30: Mumbai Indians kicked off IPL 2026 with a victory, defeating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by six wickets at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. Rohit Sharma delivered a stellar performance, scoring 78 runs and breaking a significant record previously held by Virat Kohli.
Rohit has now become the highest run-scorer against a single team in IPL history, amassing 1,161 runs against KKR, surpassing Kohli’s record of 1,159 runs against Punjab Kings. Additionally, Rohit has set the record for the most runs scored against Kolkata in IPL, overtaking former captain David Warner, who scored 1,093 runs against KKR.
In the match, Rohit appeared in excellent form, partnering with Ryan Rickelton to put together 148 runs for the first wicket in just 11.5 overs. Rohit faced 38 balls, hitting six fours and six sixes during his innings. Rickelton contributed significantly as well, scoring 81 runs off 43 balls at a strike rate of 188. Thanks to their impressive performance, Mumbai Indians chased down KKR’s target of 221 runs in 19.1 overs, marking their highest successful run chase in IPL history.
Earlier, after losing the toss, KKR batted first and scored 220 runs for the loss of four wickets in their 20 overs. Captain Ajinkya Rahane led the charge with 67 runs off 40 balls, while Finn Allen made a quickfire 37 runs off just 17 balls. Ankur Raghuwanshi added 51 runs off 29 balls, and Rinku Singh finished with an unbeaten 33 runs from 21 balls.
