NEW DELHI — A fresh spell of monsoon activity is intensifying across India, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a comprehensive weather warning. As soaring temperatures blanket central and northern India, several states are now bracing for heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and hail over the coming days.

Rising Heat in Northern Plains, Relief Expected in Hills
Sweltering conditions persist across Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and parts of Madhya Pradesh, where daytime temperatures have breached seasonal averages. The oppressive heat has led to increased electricity usage, prompting demand surges in urban centers. However, relief may be on the horizon for northern India.
The IMD has forecast a significant shift due to active western disturbances, especially impacting the western Himalayan region. As a result, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir are expected to receive moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunder and hail between March 27 and March 29. Light snowfall in upper altitudes of Himachal and Kashmir has already brought down temperatures, providing a respite from the early onset of summer.
Southern and Northeastern States to See Heavy Showers
Weather patterns have also shifted in South India, where parts of Kerala and Karnataka are witnessing intermittent rainfall. This unseasonal wet spell is expected to continue, pulling temperatures downward and bringing cooler winds across coastal regions.
Meanwhile, the Northeast faces intense weather activity. Arunachal Pradesh and neighboring states have been put on alert for heavy rains on March 28 and 29, raising concerns over potential flooding and landslides in hilly terrains. The IMD urges local administrations and residents to stay prepared for any weather-related emergencies.
Western Disturbance to Dominate Northwest India
According to the IMD, an active Western Disturbance is now impacting the Western Himalayan Region, resulting in both rainfall and snowfall across multiple elevations. High-altitude areas in Jammu and Kashmir are likely to experience snowfall, while lower valleys and plains in Punjab and North Haryana may see thunderstorms and strong winds.
Residents in Delhi-NCR are also advised to prepare for fluctuating weather, with light cold winds and cloudy skies expected through March 29. Although temperatures remain high during the day, the nights are likely to be cooler, thanks to the western system’s impact.
