New Delhi, July 21: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has criticized the central government following the youth protests at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on Monday. Disturbed by the clashes that occurred during the demonstration, Kharge announced that he would not celebrate his birthday.
In a statement released on X, Kharge expressed that the nation witnessed the government’s suppression of peaceful democratic protests and the incident of police baton charging. Instead of responding to the voices of students demanding justice, force was used against them. “The ‘mother of democracy’ does not treat its young children in this manner. In these unfortunate circumstances, I have decided not to celebrate my birthday today,” he stated.
Kharge expressed gratitude to all Congress leaders, workers, supporters, and citizens who sent him well wishes, saying, “Your affection means a lot to me, and I sincerely thank you all, but today is not a day for celebration. It is a day to ensure accountability and restore democracy.”
The Congress leader raised several questions directed at the central government, asking, “Why was there a baton charge on students demanding justice? Why was Parliament nearly sealed and the internet shut down? Who will take responsibility for the repeated paper leaks and the troubles faced by millions of youth?”
He urged the government to allow a full discussion on this issue in Parliament immediately. Kharge called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, holding him morally and politically responsible for the situation. He advocated for the implementation of a 21st-century student-centered examination system with a secure digital question bank and randomized papers. He also emphasized the need for increased spending on education and a merit-based education system free from political interference. In case of examination irregularities, he insisted on mandatory re-examinations and legal protections for students. “Our children deserve justice, not oppression,” he concluded.
