Kabul, July 21: India has dispatched relief materials to assist those affected by severe flooding in the Nuristan province of Afghanistan. The aid, which includes food supplies and tents for families, was handed over to Afghanistan’s National Disaster Management Authority on Tuesday.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) posted on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “Following the devastating floods in Nuristan, India has sent relief materials, including food and tents for families, to the National Disaster Management Authority of Afghanistan to support the affected people. During this difficult time, India stands with the people of Afghanistan.”
Local media reports indicate that at least 20 people have died and over 80 have been injured due to the floods in the Parun city of Nuristan province. According to the Afghan news agency Khaama Press, the Taliban administration has reported that more than 100 individuals are still missing following the floods in Parun and surrounding areas.
The National Disaster Management Authority, operated by the Taliban, stated that the rapid flooding has impacted Parun and several other regions in Nuristan, resulting in significant loss of life and property. Hafiz Mohammad Yusuf Hamd, head of the authority’s information and publication department, mentioned that expert teams have been dispatched to the affected areas to assess the situation, search for missing persons, and evaluate the damage.
The floods have caused extensive damage to homes, agricultural land, and shops, leading to severe economic losses for the residents. Hamd noted that as rescue and relief operations continue, the number of deceased and injured may change.
With over 100 individuals still unaccounted for, authorities fear that the death toll may rise as rescue teams advance their search efforts for those swept away by the strong currents. The flooding was triggered by heavy rainfall in several parts of Nuristan. The mountainous terrain and limited road access have posed significant challenges for relief and rescue operations. Afghanistan is among the countries highly vulnerable to weather-related natural disasters, frequently experiencing landslides, droughts, and floods.
