Washington, July 21: Jamison Greer, the United States Trade Representative, defended President Donald Trump’s extensive tariff policy, stating that it has bolstered America’s position in trade negotiations with several countries, including India. He claimed that this policy has facilitated progress in agreements with key trading partners and has accelerated the government’s efforts to revitalize the American manufacturing sector.
In an interview with The New York Times, Greer acknowledged the legal challenges and criticisms from economists and business organizations against the tariff policy, yet he asserted that the government’s strategy is proving successful.
When asked if the tariff policy is working, he replied, “Absolutely. I believe we have achieved significant success. Whenever you make a major policy change and challenge large businesses or special interests, opposition is inevitable. Many want to maintain the old system, but we want to change it.”
Greer explained that the Trump administration took swift action because it believed that the continuously rising US trade deficit had become a serious problem for the economy. According to him, imposing broad tariffs has benefited the US in negotiating new trade agreements with various countries.
He noted that this policy has allowed the US to advance trade negotiations with countries such as the UK, the European Union, Indonesia, India, and Japan.
Greer also acknowledged that the US Supreme Court had struck down a significant part of the government’s tariff program. However, he expressed no regrets about the strategy.
He stated, “It is not new for our policies to face challenges in court. There will always be some who want to profit at the expense of American workers and will litigate to protect their old business models.”
According to Greer, the administration is now pursuing its trade policy through other legal avenues and is committed to making significant changes to the American trade system that has been in place for decades.
He concluded, “Ultimately, we are succeeding in changing trade policy. The trade deficit is decreasing. Companies are starting to produce again in America. We are successfully raising wages. We are succeeding in all these areas. Therefore, I am pleased with our current position and direction.”
Greer clarified that the goal of the US is not to change the world but to alter trade rules in its favor.
He stated, “We are not against any specific country. Our aim is solely to protect American interests. If necessary, we will take required steps against other countries, but our priority is America.”
Rejecting the political criticism surrounding the tariff policy, Greer emphasized that the effects of this policy will not be immediate but will manifest over the long term.
He remarked, “The purpose of this trade policy is to increase people’s incomes, strengthen manufacturing, and boost agricultural production. Over time, the American public will see the benefits.”
Greer acknowledged that rebuilding the country’s manufacturing capacity will take time. However, he noted that positive signs are already beginning to emerge, with increased investment in factories, improved wages in the manufacturing sector, and enhancements in industrial production capacity.
