Shimla, February 3 – Himachal Pradesh is set to witness a shift in weather conditions, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting rain and snowfall on February 4 and 5 due to an active western disturbance. While higher altitudes are expected to receive heavy snowfall, plains and mid-mountain areas will likely experience rain with thunderstorms.
The IMD has also issued a yellow alert for stormy winds and lightning in 10 districts, excluding Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur. After a brief clearance on February 6 and 7, another spell of rain and snowfall is forecasted for February 8 and 9.

Western Disturbance to Bring Snowfall and Rain
According to meteorologists, an active western disturbance over the Himalayas will lead to intense weather activity across Himachal Pradesh.
- February 4-5: Heavy snowfall expected in higher altitudes, including Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur.
- Mid-altitude and plains: Thunderstorms with rainfall, accompanied by strong winds.
- February 6-7: Clear weather expected.
- February 8-9: Another spell of rain and snowfall likely.
The unusually dry weather in January, with 80% less rainfall than normal, has already raised concerns among farmers and orchard owners, as the lack of precipitation threatens winter crops and fruit plantations.
Yellow Alert for 10 Districts: Strong Winds & Lightning Warning
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for February 4, warning of:
✅ Strong winds (stormy conditions)
✅ Lightning strikes in 10 districts
✅ Possibility of travel disruptions due to snowfall
Although Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur have been excluded from the storm alert, these regions will likely face transportation challenges due to heavy snowfall blocking roads and mountain passes.
Cold Wave Continues as Night Temperatures Plummet
Despite daytime sunshine providing brief relief, night temperatures continue to plunge below freezing levels in several parts of Himachal Pradesh.
According to the latest IMD data, the minimum temperature across the state has dropped by 0.4°C in the last 24 hours.
Coldest Places in Himachal Pradesh (Last 24 Hours)
🌡️ Kukumseri (Lahaul-Spiti): -9.8°C (Coldest in the state)
🌡️ Tabo: -9.3°C
🌡️ Keylong: -8.3°C
🌡️ Kalpa: -0.5°C
🌡️ Manali: 0.7°C (Near freezing)
🌡️ Shimla: 6.2°C (Slight rise, 2.2°C above normal)
While Shimla recorded a slight rise in night temperatures, other areas, particularly in Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur, continue to experience intense cold waves.
Daytime Relief, But Chilly Nights Ahead
Despite sunshine in Shimla, Manali, and other hill stations, cold winds persisted, making the weather uncomfortably chilly.
Experts predict that night temperatures will continue to drop, and cold wave conditions will persist over the coming days. The approaching rain and snowfall spell is expected to further intensify winter conditions across the state.
Weather Outlook: More Snow and Rain Expected
Residents, travelers, and farmers are advised to stay updated on weather alerts as Himachal Pradesh braces for another round of harsh winter conditions. With snowfall and storms on the horizon, precautions should be taken to avoid travel disruptions and cold-related health risks.
