Bhopal, August 27: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested two engineers from BSNL in Bhopal on Thursday for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹75,000. The arrested individuals include the Chief Engineer (Electrical) and the Superintending Engineer (Electrical) of BSNL, Bhopal.
The CBI registered the case after it was reported that the engineers demanded an illegal bribe of ₹2 lakh each from a firm in Jabalpur, which is involved in operations and maintenance (OCM) and electrical installation work for BSNL.
According to the CBI, the bribe was solicited to process pending bills for 14 different projects of the firm. The agency set up a trap and caught the two officials red-handed in Bhopal while they were accepting ₹75,000 as part of the demanded bribe.
The CBI also conducted searches at the homes and offices of the accused in Bhopal, Lucknow, and Kanpur.
In a separate incident, the CBI and CISF arrested a senior accounting officer and two assistant accounting officers from the regional pay and accounts office in Ranchi for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of over ₹48,000 from a colleague. The officers had sought the bribe to facilitate the payment of various allowance bills for their unit’s personnel.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Senior Accounting Officer Santosh Kumar Mahto and Assistant Accounting Officers Sunil Kumar and Sujit Kumar Singh. They are expected to be presented before a competent court on Friday.
The CBI had registered the case against these three government employees on Wednesday.
