Heavy Rain Likely in South Bengal as Low Pressure Forms Over Bay of Bengal

Kolkata, October 25 (Udaipur Kiran) — A low-pressure area has formed over the southeast Bay of Bengal, raising the possibility of heavy rainfall across Kolkata and several districts of South Bengal from Tuesday onwards. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is moving gradually towards the west and northwest and may intensify into a depression by Sunday, with a likelihood of turning into a cyclone by Monday morning.

Heavy Rain

A special bulletin issued by the Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore, Kolkata, stated that the exact path and landfall impact of the potential cyclone will be assessed once the system develops further.

As per the forecast, rainfall is expected to begin in East Medinipur and South 24 Parganas from Monday. From Tuesday, heavy showers accompanied by gusty winds of 30–40 kmph are likely in Kolkata, South and North 24 Parganas, East Medinipur, Howrah, Hooghly, and Jhargram districts. Thunderstorms with lightning are also expected in some areas.

An IMD official said, “We are closely monitoring the situation. Conditions are favourable for cyclone formation over the Bay of Bengal. The intensity of rainfall in the state will depend on the strength and direction of the system.”

Meanwhile, districts including South and North 24 Parganas, East and West Medinipur, Jhargram, Hooghly, Howrah, Nadia, Murshidabad, East Burdwan, and Kolkata are likely to receive heavy rainfall till Thursday.
