Orange Alert for Several Districts, Yellow Alert for Others Amid Rain Warnings
Chennai, March 11, 2025 – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for multiple districts in southern Tamil Nadu, predicting intense rainfall over the next 48 hours. An Orange Alert has been issued for some districts, while a Yellow Alert is in place for others.

Orange Alert for Heavy to Very Heavy Rain in Four Districts
The IMD has placed the districts of Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Thoothukudi under an Orange Alert due to the high likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall on Wednesday, March 12. These regions are expected to experience intense downpours, which could lead to localized flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas.
The weather department has advised residents and authorities to remain cautious and take necessary precautions as the heavy rain may impact transportation and daily activities in these districts.
Yellow Alert for Several Other Tamil Nadu Districts
In addition to the Orange Alert, the IMD has also issued a Yellow Alert for the following districts, indicating the possibility of moderate to heavy rain:
✔ Virudhunagar
✔ Sivaganga
✔ Mayiladuthurai
✔ Thanjavur
✔ Thiruvarur
✔ Nagapattinam
✔ Pudukkottai
✔ Ramanathapuram
The Yellow Alert suggests localized heavy showers in these regions, although the rainfall intensity may not be as severe as in the Orange Alert districts. However, travelers, farmers, and local authorities are advised to stay alert and plan accordingly.
Weather Conditions in Chennai and Other Parts of Tamil Nadu
While southern Tamil Nadu braces for heavy rains, the rest of the state, including Puducherry, will experience dry weather. However, Chennai and surrounding areas are likely to see cloudy skies with occasional showers, thunderstorms, and lightning activity.
Temperature Forecast for Chennai:
🌡 Maximum Temperature: 32-34°C
🌡 Minimum Temperature: 22-24°C
Cloud cover and moderate rainfall will keep the city’s weather relatively pleasant, with occasional thunder and lightning predicted over the next two days.
Reason Behind the Rainfall: Weather System in the Region
The intensified weather activity over southern Tamil Nadu is primarily due to:
☁ Strengthening of easterly winds over the Bay of Bengal
☁ Moisture accumulation leading to cloud formation
☁ A low-pressure system triggering heavy rain in coastal and interior districts
These weather patterns are expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall in select areas, particularly in districts closer to the Western Ghats and the southeastern coastline.
Precautionary Measures and Advisory
The IMD has advised residents of Orange Alert districts to:
✔ Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall periods
✔ Stay indoors and ensure safety during thunderstorms
✔ Be cautious of waterlogging and minor flash floods in low-lying areas
✔ Secure outdoor objects and take shelter to avoid lightning strikes
Meanwhile, fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into rough sea areas, as wind speeds may increase along the southern coast.
When Will the Rain Subside?
According to the IMD forecast, the heavy rainfall spell is expected to persist through Wednesday and gradually decrease from Thursday onwards. By the weekend, southern Tamil Nadu may return to normal weather conditions with only scattered showers in isolated areas.
