Panaji, May 1: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant inaugurated a series of worker-centric welfare schemes at Lok Bhavan on the occasion of International Labour Day. The initiatives aim to empower the workforce across the state and strengthen social security.
The unveiling of these schemes took place in the presence of Revenue, Labour and Employment Minister Atanasio Monserrate and other dignitaries. This marks a new effort by the state government to extend welfare schemes for workers and improve their living standards.
According to officials, the newly announced schemes focus on various aspects of worker welfare, including digital literacy programs to equip workers with essential technical skills, medical assistance for elderly parents of workers, and financial support for children preparing for competitive exams. The government has also introduced provisions for tuition fee reimbursement for higher education, ensuring better access to educational opportunities for workers’ families.
Additionally, workers will be covered under the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY), providing them with accident insurance benefits and enhancing their financial security.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to the principle of Antyodaya, which means that welfare measures should reach the last person in the queue. He emphasized that workers are the backbone of Goa’s economy, and their welfare is central to the state’s development vision.
Highlighting the state’s progress, Sawant mentioned that over 1.4 million workers have registered under various labour welfare schemes. He urged more workers to come forward and take advantage of these initiatives, assuring that the government will continue to strengthen mechanisms for labour security, welfare, and social protection.
During the ceremony, the Chief Minister honored 20 dedicated workers with the Labour Gaurav Shramik Mitra award for their invaluable contributions to Goa’s development.
Reiterating the government’s long-term vision, Sawant stated that empowering workers will play a crucial role in achieving the goal of ‘Developed Goa 2037’, with inclusive development and social security remaining paramount in policy initiatives in the coming years.
