Elderly Woman Donates Life Savings to Soldiers in Karnataka

Bengaluru, June 23: An elderly woman from Davanagere, Karnataka, has donated her entire life savings to support the families of soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for the nation. This initiative is part of a government program encouraging citizens to contribute to the welfare of the families of martyred soldiers.

Known for her advocacy of euthanasia, K.B. Karibasamma, a retired school teacher, combined her pension, savings, and the proceeds from selling her home to make this generous donation.

Karibasamma herself is battling cancer and has been campaigning for the right to a dignified death for those suffering from terminal illnesses. Euthanasia refers to the practice of allowing patients in a permanent coma or critical condition, where treatment is not possible, to die with dignity.

She is recognized in Davanagere district for her efforts in supporting euthanasia and has received widespread appreciation for her recent decision to donate all her savings to the military.

She contributed a cheque of ₹10 lakh to the ‘Bharat Ke Veer’ corpus fund and is currently residing in a senior citizens’ home. In an interview, Karibasamma expressed her desire to donate her life savings to Prime Minister Modi, although she felt that opportunity eluded her. “My health is deteriorating day by day. I had also written a letter to the Prime Minister. I have handed over this money to the Deputy Commissioner of my city,” she stated.

She decided that instead of spending on her medical treatment, she would contribute the amount for the welfare of soldiers. District Commissioner G.M. Gangadhara Swamy noted that Karibasamma has been writing to the government regarding the issue of euthanasia for a long time and had also met with him at the senior citizens’ home. He confirmed that the funds are being forwarded to the government.

Former MLC Dr. Shivayogi Swami described her act as highly inspirational, encouraging society to take a cue from her selfless gesture. He mentioned that Karibasamma’s total contribution of ₹10 lakh was made up of approximately ₹6 lakh from the sale of her house and ₹4 lakh saved from her pension.
