New Delhi, July 22: The opposition made a clear statement in Parliament on Wednesday, asserting that a fair discussion in the House is only possible if Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resigns from his position.
Leader of the Opposition, Mallikarjun Kharge, speaking in the Rajya Sabha, demanded the resignation of the Union Education Minister. He emphasized that meaningful discussions can only take place if the minister steps down, urging the government to accept his resignation. Kharge was responding to the government’s proposal to discuss the NEET-related issues in the House.
Kharge called for an immediate discussion on the NEET examination and its associated controversies. He stated that his party and other opposition MPs wish to discuss this matter under Rule 267. While expressing readiness for the discussion, he reiterated the demand for the resignation of the Union Education Minister.
He insisted that no discussion could occur until the minister resigns, urging the government to prioritize this issue. Kharge alleged that protesting students are being beaten and stated that they are prepared for the discussion and are not avoiding it. He asserted that the government should clear the way for debate by securing the minister’s resignation, as discussions without accountability would be meaningless.
Following Kharge’s remarks, there was a significant uproar in the House. The Deputy Chairman informed the House that previous important decisions under Rule 267 still apply to the proceedings. Notices given under Rule 267 have been accepted in the past.
It is noteworthy that under Rule 267, all other proceedings in the Rajya Sabha are suspended, and only the subject for which notice is given to the Chairman is discussed. Voting provisions are also included at the end of this discussion. The Congress and other opposition members are demanding immediate discussion under this rule. However, the Chair clarified that various Chairpersons in previous governments have generally rejected this rule, and rulings have been issued regarding it.
