New Delhi, July 20: Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike alongside the Cockroach People’s Party, has been admitted to the hospital by the police. As protesters plan to march on July 20, Delhi police have warned that the march does not have permission. Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali Angmo, stated that he would end his hunger strike if political party leaders assure him they will raise the issue of education in the assembly.
Geetanjali Angmo addressed the media at Jantar Mantar, saying, “Sonam will end his hunger strike only if MPs and leaders from various political parties meet him at Safdarjung Hospital on Monday and assure him that they will prioritize accountability in education during the monsoon session of Parliament.”
She emphasized the importance of the upcoming march, expressing hope for its success as people from across the country and several political leaders are expected to join. Wangchuk has made it clear that he will only conclude his hunger strike if he receives assurances from the leaders regarding the education agenda.
Geetanjali Angmo reiterated their goal of ensuring accountability in the education system and raising the issue of educational reform on a national level.
It is noteworthy that the Cockroach People’s Party has been protesting at Jantar Mantar since June 20, and the Delhi police have stated that no permission has been granted for the proposed march to Parliament on July 20.
Delhi’s DCP Sachin Sharma confirmed that no application for permission for the march has been received from the Cockroach People’s Party, and thus, no approval has been granted. He clarified that Section 163 of the BNS is applicable, and protests can only be conducted at the designated site in Jantar Mantar with prior permission.
