New Delhi, May 20 — Amid an intense heatwave sweeping across the Delhi-NCR region, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast much-needed relief in the form of rain and thunderstorms over the next few days. As the national capital swelters under extreme temperatures, residents can look forward to some temporary reprieve beginning today.

Rain, Thunderstorms Likely on May 20
The IMD’s latest update indicates a high probability of rain and dust storms across Delhi-NCR today, May 20. A yellow alert has been issued for Gautam Buddha Nagar and Ghaziabad, warning of gusty winds and lightning activity. Daytime temperatures in Delhi are expected to touch 40°C, with a minimum of 29°C.
More Rain Ahead: May 21 and 22 Also Under Alert
The IMD has also issued thunderstorm and rain alerts for May 21 and 22, with another yellow alert for windstorms in Noida and Ghaziabad. These two days could see maximum temperatures drop to around 39°C and minimums around 27–28°C.
However, for residents in Faridabad and Gurugram, the heatwave is expected to persist, and a yellow alert for high temperatures remains in place.
Cloudy Skies but No Rain Expected from May 23–26
The weather forecast for the second half of the week—from May 23 to May 26—predicts cloudy skies over the capital, although no rainfall is expected during this period. Despite the lack of rain, the daytime highs will hover between 38°C and 39°C, and the minimum temperature is expected to remain around 28°C.
Brief Relief, Then Back to Summer Heat
While the incoming thunderstorms will provide a temporary dip in temperatures, the IMD cautions that Delhi-NCR should not expect a sustained break from the heat just yet. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak hours, and monitor updates from local authorities and the IMD for weather-related advisories.
