Udaipur, May 20 — In a rare and medically significant case, doctors at Pacific Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Udaipur have successfully treated a patient suffering from persistent lung infections caused by an unexpected foreign body lodged in the respiratory tract.

Weeks of Breathing Trouble Solved in a Single Procedure
According to Chairman Ashish Agrawal, the patient had been experiencing chronic cough and breathlessness for several weeks before visiting PIMS Hospital at Umarda. Initial chest X-rays did not reveal the cause of the symptoms. A more detailed High-Resolution CT (HRCT) scan was then conducted, showing signs of infection and inflammation including cavity formation in the upper left lung, bronchiectasis in the lower left, and ground-glass opacity in the lower right lobe—suggestive of an infectious or inflammatory origin.
To investigate further, a flexible bronchoscopy was performed by the hospital’s Respiratory Medicine team, which included faculty members Dr. Sanidhya Tak, Dr. Karan Singhal, Dr. Dikshant Chaudhary, Dr. Aniruddh, and postgraduate doctors Dr. Gurmihar Singh, Dr. Arpit Johar, Dr. Gaurang, and Dr. Shubhnish Chaudhary.
Shocking Discovery: Peanut Lodged in Bronchus
During the bronchoscopy, doctors discovered a peanut obstructing the bronchus in the right lower lung lobe. While such cases often require rigid bronchoscopy under general anesthesia, the PIMS team achieved a rare feat by removing the peanut using a Dormia basket via flexible bronchoscopy under local anesthesia, avoiding sedation entirely.
Following the removal of the foreign body, the patient immediately improved, with a complete resolution of cough and breathlessness, and was taken off oxygen therapy.
Medical Milestone and Important Lesson
Chairman Ashish Agrawal emphasized that this case is not only a clinical success but a teaching moment in pulmonary medicine:
“This case reminds clinicians that foreign body aspiration should not be overlooked in adults, especially when symptoms persist despite routine treatments.”
The successful intervention highlights PIMS Udaipur’s commitment to advanced respiratory care and reinforces its reputation as a leading center for complex pulmonary procedures in Rajasthan.
