CBSE Allows Class 12 Students to Improve One Subject via Supplementary Exam

New Delhi, February 16, 2026 (Udaipur Kiran) — The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a significant change for Class 12 students. From 2026 onwards, students will be allowed to appear in the supplementary examination for improvement in any one subject immediately after the main board exams.

Central Board of Secondary Education

The announcement was made by CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj. Under the new rule, students who are dissatisfied with their performance in one subject can take the supplementary exam in the same academic year to improve their marks.

Opportunity to Improve Scores

Earlier, students seeking improvement had to wait until the next year’s main board examination. With the revised provision, even students who have passed all subjects but wish to enhance their overall percentage can opt for the supplementary exam in one chosen subject.

This move is expected to benefit meritorious students who may have underperformed in a single paper due to unforeseen reasons.

In Line with NEP 2020

CBSE stated that the decision aligns with the recommendations of the National Education Policy 2020. The objective is to reduce exam-related stress and provide students with more opportunities to demonstrate their academic potential.

Officials indicated that the step will offer relief to candidates aiming to meet eligibility criteria for competitive examinations or higher education admissions.

Key Highlights of the New Rule

  • One Subject Only: Students can choose only one subject for improvement.

  • Choice of Better Score: Students may retain either their main exam marks or the supplementary exam marks. The higher score will be considered final, as per detailed board guidelines.

  • No Academic Year Loss: Since the supplementary exam will be conducted soon after the main results, students will not lose an entire academic year.

Application Process

Once the main board results are declared, CBSE will activate the registration link for the supplementary examination on its official website, cbse.gov.in. Students will have to apply online through their respective schools and pay the prescribed fee.
