Kanpur, September 14 (Udaipur Kiran) : The Uttar Pradesh government is set to draft a policy aimed at the safe, responsible, and effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) in its universities. This initiative follows the efforts of Governor Anandiben Patel, who has established an AI Policy Advisory Committee. Among its members is Professor Vinay Kumar Pathak, Vice-Chancellor of Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University (CSJMU).
Professor Pathak indicated that the governor believes AI and modern technologies can play a crucial role in advancing the nation. The committee, comprising four experts, is tasked with creating a clear framework for the utilization of AI in universities, including new technologies, services, and future strategies. The draft is expected to be ready in about three months.
Pathak emphasized the need to transition from mere discussions to actionable plans, stating, “We need to move towards a mission.” He noted that CSJMU has already been working in the AI sector and aims to accelerate these efforts. The development of new AI tools and programs will be an ongoing process, with new programs and technical solutions being created as needed.
Addressing the challenge of making AI accessible in rural areas, Pathak stressed the importance of preparing for “AI readiness” first. He mentioned the university’s AI hackathon, which prepares students to develop AI-based solutions. Initially, students will receive training in AI technologies, after which they will create models and services tailored to local needs, focusing on tools that can assist farmers, the underprivileged, and laborers.
Pathak pointed out that the true benefits of AI will only be realized when the technology is applied to solve problems across various societal segments, rather than being limited to urban centers.
On the potential risks and benefits of AI, he asserted that it has become a necessity in today’s world. While there is no need for unnecessary fear of the technology, he emphasized the importance of prioritizing ethics and human values in its application. “AI should be used responsibly and with values in mind,” he said, highlighting that every new technology carries the potential for both positive and negative uses. Therefore, it is crucial to establish a framework for its safe and ethical use rather than fearing it.
Regarding the increasing use of AI in electoral campaigns and its potential misuse, Pathak noted that new technologies have historically transformed political and social discourse. As technology evolves, so will its usage in discussions and campaigns. He anticipates that in the future, digital tools may allow for content creation using an individual’s name or identity, underscoring the growing need for responsible AI use and awareness.
The AI Policy Advisory Committee aims to address various topics in its upcoming policy, including the use of AI in universities, technical services, student preparedness, and solutions connected to society. Pathak concluded by stating that the role of universities should extend beyond just adopting technology; they must also prepare students to develop technologies that can benefit a broader segment of society.
