Gandhinagar, September 19 (Udaipur Kiran) : The Sardar Sarovar Dam on the Narmada River has reached 96% of its total capacity, according to a recent assessment released on Saturday. In addition, other reservoirs across Gujarat have accumulated 70.49% of their total water storage capacity.
Currently, 30 dams in the state are completely full, while 38 others have water levels ranging between 70% and 100%. Additionally, 25 reservoirs are at 50% to 70% capacity, 40 are between 25% and 50%, and 73 reservoirs hold less than 25% of their capacity. Given the situation, authorities have placed 45 dams on high alert, 13 on alert, and 10 under warning.
As of Saturday morning, Gujarat recorded a total of 31 inches of rainfall during the monsoon season, which is approximately 88% of the state’s seasonal average. The highest average rainfall was reported in South Gujarat, with 113.52% of the seasonal average. Other regions, such as East-Central Gujarat, received 88.57%, North Gujarat 70.33%, Saurashtra 67.86%, and Kutch 57.16%.
Over the past 24 hours, rainfall was recorded in 224 talukas across 31 districts of the state, averaging 17.20 millimeters. The highest rainfall was noted in Meghraj, Aravalli, and Gir Gadhda, Gir Somnath, each receiving three inches. Ahmedabad city saw 2.87 inches, while Talod in Sabarkantha recorded 2.52 inches, and Dediapada in Narmada received 2.40 inches.
In response to the heavy rains, ongoing rescue operations have been conducted to relocate residents to safer areas. From June 1 to September 18, a total of 85,456 people have been moved to safety, with 9,822 individuals rescued. Navsari reported the highest number of evacuations at 29,198, followed by Valsad with 22,214 and Surat with 17,992.
To assist with disaster management and relief efforts, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 10 teams, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has stationed 28 platoons in various regions. Additionally, four NDRF teams and five SDRF teams are on standby.
With rainfall in South Gujarat already exceeding the seasonal average, the overall monsoon precipitation across the state has reached 88% of the expected total.
