Chennai, September 20 (Udaipur Kiran) : The Tamil Nadu transport department has instructed district collectors to conduct public consultation meetings on September 23 regarding proposed revisions to auto rickshaw fares across the state. These meetings will involve representatives from auto rickshaw unions, consumer organizations, passengers, and other stakeholders, allowing their feedback to be considered before finalizing the new fare structure.
Currently, Tamil Nadu has approximately 346,000 registered auto rickshaws, and the existing fare rates were established in 2013. Despite repeated requests from driver unions for a review, these rates have remained unchanged. Under the current pricing model, passengers are charged ₹25 for the first 1.8 kilometers and ₹12 for each additional kilometer.
Auto rickshaw unions argue that rising fuel prices, along with increased maintenance, insurance, and parts costs, have rendered the existing rates unviable. They are advocating for a minimum fare increase to ₹45, with an additional charge of ₹20 for every extra kilometer.
The transport commissioner’s office has advised district administrations to engage with consumer groups and other stakeholders before making recommendations. The aim is to establish a fare structure that protects drivers’ livelihoods while not imposing an undue financial burden on passengers.
Sadagopan, president of the Tamil Nadu Progressive Consumer Centre, has urged the government to expedite the consultation process and announce revised fares soon, especially with the upcoming Ayudha Puja and Diwali festivals likely to increase passenger demand. He supports the unions’ call for a minimum fare of ₹45 and an additional ₹20 for each kilometer thereafter.
Furthermore, he has called for stringent regulatory measures to ensure transparency and prevent disputes between passengers and drivers. He advocates for the mandatory installation of digital fare meters and GPS in all auto rickshaws, which would help in accurate fare calculations, enhance passenger safety, and enable authorities to monitor compliance.
Before announcing any decisions, the government is expected to review suggestions gathered from the district-level meetings. This fare revision will impact millions of passengers and drivers who rely on auto rickshaws for their daily commute and livelihoods.
