BJP Declines Support for TVK in Tamil Nadu Government Formation

Chennai, May 8: In the recent Tamil Nadu assembly elections, no party secured a majority. However, actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the largest party, winning 108 seats and claiming the right to form the government. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accepted its defeat and announced that it will not participate in the next government.

Tamil Nadu BJP state president Nainar Nagendran issued an official statement on Friday, confirming that the party would not support any other party in the government formation process. He stated, “The BJP is committed to the welfare and progress of the people of Tamil Nadu and actively participated in the electoral process. We have graciously accepted the election results and believe that the people of Tamil Nadu did not give a mandate for the BJP to form the government.”

Nagendran emphasized the party’s respect for the people’s will and mandate, stating, “We do not wish to be involved in any attempts to form a new government in the state. Therefore, we do not want to actively participate in this process and will not vote for any party in the government formation efforts.”

With 108 seats in the 234-member assembly, TVK stands as the largest party. CPI leader D. Raja mentioned that CPI, CPM, and VCK have decided to support TVK in forming a secular government in Tamil Nadu.

On Tuesday, TVK leader Vijay met with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to present his claim to form the government. However, the governor informed him that the party could only be invited to form the government after proving a sufficient majority. Following this, Vijay met the governor again on Wednesday for over 40 minutes. After the meeting, a statement from the Raj Bhavan indicated that Vijay acknowledged that TVK currently lacks the numbers to form the government independently.

In efforts to gather a majority, TVK leaders intensified discussions with various political parties on Wednesday. Party General Secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar met with state secretaries of leftist parties to seek their support. Additionally, TVK representatives Arunraj and Mustafa approached Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) National President Kader Mohideen for backing.

After the meeting, Mohideen told reporters that TVK had formally contacted their party. As the leader of the largest party, Vijay has the full democratic right to claim the formation of the government. However, Mohideen clarified that IUML would consult with DMK President M.K. Stalin before making a final decision.
