New Delhi, May 8: Ukraine observes May 8 as Reconciliation Day, marking the victory over Nazism in World War II. On this occasion, a ceasefire has been announced between Ukraine and Russia from May 8 to 10, although reports of attacks have emerged despite the truce. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that today is a day to remember and celebrate the victory over Nazism, a day when all of Europe rejoices the end of one of the most horrific wars of the 20th century.
Zelensky expressed on the social media platform X, “A war that should have brought only true peace. It was a dream of the time when the guns of World War II began to fall silent. That war turned our land into a battlefield of ruthless fighting, misuse in occupied territories, and massive destruction of lives and livelihoods. The Ukrainian people suffered the most during World War II, and their contribution to defeating the Nazis was significant. Millions of Ukrainians fought against Nazism in various armies of the anti-Hitler coalition. Millions of Ukrainians were among the victors who exerted all their strength to defeat the ultimate evil.”
He added, “Unfortunately, 81 years later, we are once again forced to stop evil, an evil that is just as entrenched. An evil that brings nothing but destruction and insults, based on the same hostile mindset. An updated version of Nazism, marked ‘Made in Russia.’”
The Ukrainian President emphasized that such Russian attacks can and must be defeated by a united free world, thanking all those who help save lives. He expressed gratitude to those who do not allow this Russian government to dictate what happens next. Protecting lives and the freedom of nations from Putin is a very honorable way to honor those who prevented Hitler from taking over Europe and the world.
He concluded by thanking all those who fought against Nazism and liberated people. “Salute to all innocent victims of World War II! Hail to every defender saving lives!”
