113 Dams in Gujarat on High Alert After Heavy Rainfall; Sardar Sarovar at 89% Capacity

Gandhinagar, September 4 (Kiran News): Gujarat has recorded heavy rainfall this monsoon, with the state reporting an average of 92.64% seasonal rainfall as of September 4, 2025. According to the State Emergency Operations Centre, Gandhinagar, as many as 113 dams across Gujarat have been placed on high alert due to rising water levels.

Regional rainfall data shows North Gujarat received the highest at 96.94%, followed closely by South Gujarat at 96.91%, East-Central Gujarat at 93.79%, Kutch at 85.14% and Saurashtra at 84.74%.

Out of the state’s 206 dams (excluding Sardar Sarovar), 82 are now filled to 100% of capacity, 68 are between 70–100%, 24 are at 50–70%, and 17 are at 25–50%. The state’s lifeline, the Sardar Sarovar Dam, currently holds over 89% of its total storage capacity.

The heavy rainfall has also benefited agriculture. As of September 1, 2025, kharif crop sowing has covered 96.29% of the targeted area. This includes peanut cultivation on 22 lakh hectares, cotton on 20 lakh hectares, and paddy on more than 8 lakh hectares, according to the state agriculture department.

In the past 24 hours, 24 districts and 158 talukas recorded more than 12 mm rainfall. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a warning advising fishermen not to venture into the sea between September 4 and 7 due to rough conditions.
