Lucknow, June 4 — A shift in weather patterns, driven by an approaching cyclonic circulation from Pakistan and an active western disturbance, has brought significant rainfall and thunderstorm activity across Uttar Pradesh. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for Saharanpur, Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, and Bijnor, while 49 districts are under warning for thunderstorms, lightning, and light rainfall.

The weather shift has brought noticeable changes in both day and night temperatures, along with reports of storm-related damage in parts of the state.
Bahraich Sees Sharpest Temperature Drop
In the past 24 hours, Bahraich recorded a drop of 8.2°C in daytime temperature, bringing the maximum down to 30.4°C, the biggest fall across the state. Other cities also saw significant drops:
-
Aligarh: Down by 5.9°C to 34.4°C
-
Barabanki: Down by 5.7°C to 33.4°C
However, night temperatures in several areas increased, with Ghazipur recording a 4.1°C rise (minimum at 29°C) and Ballia logging a 3.4°C rise (minimum at 29.5°C), indicating a growing contrast between day and night conditions.
Storms, Hail, and Disruption Reported
On Tuesday, rainfall was reported in 18 cities, ranging from light drizzles to heavy downpours. Bareilly and Varanasi experienced sharp evening showers with gusty winds. In Sambhal, hailstorms were reported along with rain. A tree fell onto a railway crossing, halting movement temporarily.
Aligarh recorded the highest rainfall at 8 mm on Tuesday.
According to BHU meteorologist Prof. Manoj Srivastava, this weather pattern is expected to persist for another 48 hours, with scattered rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds continuing across parts of the state.
Heat to Return After June 5
Meteorologist Atul Kumar Singh warned that after June 5, wind direction is expected to shift from easterly to westerly, leading to a 5–6°C rise in maximum temperatures across the state. The hottest location recorded in the past 24 hours was Banda at 44.2°C, while the lowest minimum temperature was 22°C in Hardoi.
Monsoon Arrival in UP May Be Delayed
Earlier predictions suggested monsoon arrival in UP between June 15–16, but due to the stalled monsoon system, its onset could be delayed by 7–10 days. The monsoon is now expected in the last week of June, according to the latest assessments.
Despite the current cooling effect, June is expected to be warmer overall, especially due to the monsoon’s delayed progress. Maximum temperatures could reach 46–47°C before the monsoon finally settles in. While UP has yet to experience an official heatwave day this year, conditions could favor heatwave development after the first week of June.
June Weather Outlook for UP
-
Rain and thunderstorms until June 5
-
6°C temperature rise expected after June 5
-
Heatwave conditions may develop mid-June
-
Monsoon likely around June 25–30
-
June to remain warmer than average, but heatwave days fewer than normal
