Ahmedabad, March 9: Sanju Samson played a pivotal role in India’s T20 World Cup 2026 victory, scoring 97*, 89, and 89 runs in the tournament’s final three matches. With a remarkable average of 80.25, he amassed a total of 321 runs, earning the title of ‘Player of the Series.’
In the championship match held at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, India set a target of 255 runs, losing five wickets, while New Zealand was bowled out for just 159 runs in 19 overs.
Following the victory, Samson expressed his emotions, stating, “It feels like a dream. I am very happy and grateful. I have no words to express my feelings.”
Reflecting on his three half-centuries, he mentioned, “To be honest, this journey began a year or two ago. When I was part of the T20 World Cup 2024 team but didn’t get a chance to play, I kept imagining this moment and worked hard for it. I wanted to achieve exactly what I did today.”
After a disappointing performance against New Zealand in January 2026, where he scored only 46 runs in five matches, Samson admitted, “I was completely broken after the New Zealand series. My dreams felt shattered, and I was wondering what to do next, but God had a different plan. Perhaps I was rewarded for daring to dream big.”
During his struggles, Samson received support from legendary players, which he revealed after winning the World Cup. He said, “Many former players reached out to me and tried to help. I have been in constant touch with Sachin Tendulkar over the past few months. I contacted him myself, and we had long conversations. What could be greater than receiving guidance from such a legendary player? I am very grateful to everyone who supported me.”
