Bumrahs Historic Win at Home Ground in World Cup Final

Ahmedabad, March 9: India clinched the T20 World Cup 2026 title for the third time, defeating New Zealand by 96 runs. The final, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium, saw Jasprit Bumrah shine with an impressive performance, taking four wickets for just 15 runs, earning him the ‘Player of the Match’ award.

Following the historic victory, Bumrah expressed his joy, stating, “This win is very special for me, as I had played a final (ODI World Cup 2023) at my home ground before but did not win. Today, that gap has been filled.”

Discussing the pitch conditions, Bumrah noted, “I knew the wicket was quite flat, so I had to use all my experience. Before this tournament, I felt like I was trying too hard. I was bowling well but perhaps overexerting myself. In this tournament, I allowed the match to come to me, and that approach worked well for me. Assessing my strengths has always been crucial.”

On his slower deliveries, he attributed his success to experience, saying, “I have played on flat wickets here before and observed other teams. I learned that trying to bowl too fast makes it easier for batsmen to play shots. So, I bowled wisely, trying to understand what the batsmen wanted to do.”

Bumrah also praised the bowling unit, stating, “Whenever we discuss, everyone brings options to the table. We communicated well when needed. We never showed panic and remained calm under pressure. Teams that do this win tournaments, and I’m glad we did the same.”

In the title match, the Indian team batted first, scoring 255 runs for the loss of five wickets, thanks to half-centuries from Sanju Samson (89), Abhishek Sharma (52), and Ishan Kishan (54). In response, New Zealand was bowled out for just 159 runs in 19 overs.
