Srinagar, September 6 (Udaipur Kiran) : The 29th Sub-Junior National Sepak Takraw Championship has officially commenced at the Sher-e-Kashmir Indoor Sports Complex in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The event, taking place from September 6 to September 10, has attracted more than 800 players and coaches from 30 states and union territories.
Numan Sofi, representing Jammu and Kashmir, shared insights about the tournament during the opening ceremony held on Sunday. He emphasized the importance of promoting the sport in the region, stating, “We brought this tournament to Jammu and Kashmir with the hope that this game, which is not widely played or enjoyed here, can be celebrated. It is a recognized sport by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and is also included in the Asian Games and the Khelo India scheme.”
Sofi further noted that over a thousand athletes, referees, coaches, and managers from more than 30 states and union territories are participating in the championship. He conveyed a message to the youth watching from home, encouraging them to engage in sports to stay away from drugs and other harmful activities.
Shubanshu Kumar, a participant from Bihar, shared his experience, mentioning that he has been playing for four years. He highlighted that athletes can secure jobs through sports quotas, helping them achieve their dreams. Afan Shiras, a player from Jammu and Kashmir, praised the game and urged children to show interest in it. Last season, Uttar Pradesh performed exceptionally well and claimed the title, and they will be looking to defend their championship this time around.
