Kolkata, May 21: Re-polling has commenced for the Falta assembly seat in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Long queues of voters were observed at polling stations from early morning as citizens gathered in large numbers to exercise their democratic rights peacefully.
Voting began at 7 AM on Wednesday, surrounded by strict security provided by 35 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). One voter reported that the voting process has been proceeding smoothly and peacefully since morning.
According to officials, over 236,000 voters are expected to cast their votes across 285 booths in this election. Currently, six candidates are contesting in Falta, although the Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan has already announced his withdrawal from the election. However, his name remains on the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM).
Debangshu Panda is the candidate from the BJP, while the Congress has fielded Abdur Razzak Molla, and the CPM has nominated Shambhu Nath Kurmi. Two other candidates are running as independents. The election results will be announced on May 24.
In the second phase of the recently concluded West Bengal assembly elections, voting took place in Falta on April 29. However, several complaints of alleged electoral fraud emerged that day, including reports of EVM buttons for BJP candidates being covered with white tape at various polling booths.
Based on these findings, the Election Commission of India (ECI) ordered re-polling across the entire Falta assembly constituency.
