Kitzbühel, July 22: The Generali Open ATP tournament in Kitzbühel, Austria, witnessed significant upsets on Wednesday as Quentin Halys, Sebastian Baez, and Mariano Navone secured their spots in the quarterfinals by defeating seeded players. These results have made the final eight matchups even more thrilling.
France’s Quentin Halys delivered the day’s biggest upset by defeating second seed Valentin Vacherot 6-3, 6-4. The 29-year-old Halys, participating in this tournament for the first time, maintained excellent control throughout the match. He successfully saved the only break point he faced and achieved his fifth career victory against a top-20 ranked player. With this win, Halys reached his fourth ATP Tour clay-court quarterfinal and his ninth tour-level quarterfinal overall.
After the match, Halys expressed that it was one of his best performances of the year. He noted that his serve was outstanding and he remained focused from the first point to the last. He engaged in long rallies, forcing his opponent into difficult shots.
For Vacherot, this match proved to be another challenge on his road to recovery. The world number 19 had withdrawn from Roland Garros in May due to a stress fracture in his foot and this was only his second tournament since returning. Meanwhile, Halys has not dropped a set in Kitzbühel so far and will face Argentina’s Mariano Navone next.
Mariano Navone continued his impressive run by defeating sixth-seeded Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff 6-0, 6-3. Having won his first ATP Tour title in Bucharest in April, Navone has also reached the quarterfinals this week without losing a set. Ranked 47th in the world, he has secured 18 tour-level victories this season, matching his best performance from the past two years.
Former champion Sebastian Baez showcased his clay-court expertise by overcoming third seed Arthur Rinderknech in a grueling match that lasted two hours and 27 minutes, winning 7-6(6), 2-6, 6-4. Six of Baez’s seven ATP titles have come on clay courts, including the Kitzbühel title in 2023. He will now face Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann, who defeated Marco Trungelliti 6-4, 7-6(2).
In other matches, fifth seed Ignacio Buse made a strong comeback after losing a set to defeat Switzerland’s qualifier Kilian Feldbösch 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. Fourth seed Tomás Martín Etcheverry also advanced to the quarterfinals by beating local player and qualifier Jurij Rodionov 6-2, 7-6(4). Buse and Etcheverry will face each other in the quarterfinals.
